Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), refers to persistent symptoms experienced weeks or months after contracting COVID-19. These symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties, loss of taste or smell, and others. Acute COVID-19, on the other hand, refers to the initial phase of the illness when individuals typically experience symptoms such as fever, cough, and body aches. While acute COVID-19 usually resolves within a few weeks, long COVID can persist for an extended period, affecting the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of individuals.

Cupping therapy has shown remarkable success in addressing long COVID symptoms by promoting blood circulation, immune modulation, and respiratory recovery. By enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation, cupping therapy may help mitigate cytokine storms associated with long COVID. Additionally, it can provide relief from fatigue, body aches, respiratory issues, and other symptoms commonly experienced by individuals with long COVID.

Physical therapy plays a crucial role in the recovery from long COVID by addressing symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, and joint pain. Through targeted exercises, manual therapy techniques, and functional training, physical therapists help improve mobility, restore strength, and enhance overall function. This fosters resilience, promotes recovery, and empowers individuals to regain independence in their daily activities.

Medications play a vital role in managing specific symptoms and conditions associated with long COVID. For example, medications may target symptoms such as cough, headaches, anxiety, and depression. Emphasizing a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants is recommended for individuals with long COVID to support immune function and overall health. Targeted supplementation with nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc may offer additional immune-supporting benefits and aid in symptom management for individuals recovering from COVID-19.

Emerging treatments such as montelukast and nicotinamide riboside show promise in targeting specific aspects of long COVID’s pathophysiology. Montelukast may alleviate respiratory symptoms by targeting leukotrienes involved in inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Nicotinamide riboside, a form of vitamin B3, could potentially address cognitive and physical symptoms post-COVID-19 by supporting mitochondrial function and cellular energy production.

During cupping therapy sessions for long COVID, it is essential to adhere to strict safety precautions to minimize the risk of infection transmission. This includes proper sanitation of equipment and treatment areas, maintaining hygiene standards, and ensuring that both the practitioner and the patient wear appropriate protective gear such as masks and gloves. Additionally, practitioners should follow established guidelines and protocols for cupping therapy to ensure the safety and well-being of their patients.

Gentle stretches are generally the best stretches for back pain, the more pain you have the more gentle you should be. A good principle when stretching your back is to use ‘time’ to stretch out rather than ‘effort’. Set a timer for 3 whole minutes and hold each stretch gently for that long, it will feel like a long time. Two excellent resources for lower back stretches are ‘McKenzie Stretches’ and ‘Yin Yoga Back Stretches’, if you put those terms  into YouTube you will find some great options.
