01 / Assessment

Understanding your back pain

The details of your pain can provide important clues about what may be causing it.

We look at where and when your pain occurs, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects your daily life. We also consider your medical history, previous injuries, relevant scans and any treatment you've already had.

Together with a clinical examination, this information helps us investigate possible causes and decide on an appropriate approach to your care.

MORE WAYS TO APPROACH PAIN

Treatment option 01

Hands-on treatment

Hands-on treatment is an important part of our approach to back pain.

Depending on your assessment, treatment may include joint mobilisation or manipulation, soft tissue therapy and other manual techniques. Our practitioners draw on a range of techniques to select an approach suited to your particular problem.

Treatment technologies

Alongside hands-on treatment, Severn offers a range of treatment technologies, including acoustic shockwave therapies and therapeutic laser therapies.

These technologies give our practitioners additional treatment options that can be considered where clinically appropriate, either on their own or alongside other approaches.

Exercise and rehabilitation

Exercise and rehabilitation can also play an important role in managing back pain.

Where appropriate, we look for specific patterns of muscle weakness and develop targeted exercises to address them, tailoring the programme to your individual needs and abilities.

03 / Persistent pain

When back pain keeps coming back

Persistent or recurring back pain can be particularly frustrating, especially when treatment fails to provide lasting improvement.

Understanding what has and hasn't helped in the past can provide valuable clues. At Severn, we consider your previous treatment outcomes alongside your symptoms and clinical findings, looking for opportunities to approach the problem differently.

Our aim is to make informed decisions about what to try next, rather than simply repeat what hasn't worked.

“If you want a dedicated, communicative and engaging team to look after you this is the place to go. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.”

04 / First appointment

What happens at your first appointment?

Your first appointment begins with a careful discussion about your symptoms and health history, followed by a physical examination.

We tailor the assessment to your circumstances, taking the time needed to understand more complex problems while keeping things straightforward when your situation is simpler.

We'll explain our findings, answer your questions and discuss the treatment options we consider appropriate.

In the vast majority of cases, treatment can begin at your first appointment. Where further investigation or referral is needed, we'll discuss the next steps with you.

YOUR QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an X-ray or MRI before booking?

No. Most people with back pain don't need imaging before their first appointment. If we believe further investigation is appropriate, we'll discuss this with you.

Can I book if I've only just hurt my back?

Absolutely. We see people with recent back injuries as well as those experiencing longer-standing problems.

Do I need a medical referral?

No. You can contact Severn directly to arrange an appointment without a referral from your GP.

How quickly can I get an appointment?

We manage our clinic staffing and appointments to minimise waiting times for people in pain. Although our diary is often busy, we work hard to avoid long waiting lists and can frequently accommodate urgent appointments.

Will my treatment be the same as treatments I've had before?

We offer a range of treatments and technologies. Recommendations depend on your assessment.

This means we can offer treatment approaches and options you may not have experienced before. What we recommend will depend on your individual needs and clinical findings.

Will I need a course of treatment?

That depends on your problem and how you respond to care. We'll discuss our recommendations with you rather than assume you need a fixed number of appointments.

Can you assess back pain that travels into my leg?

Yes. Back pain accompanied by symptoms in the leg can be assessed to help determine what may be causing them and whether further investigation is needed.

When should I seek urgent medical attention?

Back pain accompanied by new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the groin or saddle area, or new or worsening leg weakness needs urgent medical assessment. Don't wait for a routine clinic appointment if these symptoms occur.
